Go forth, and battle the skeletons that have taken over the local castle!

Skull Tactics is a love letter to one of my childhood favorite games, Shining Force. It is a TRPG, albiet an extremely streamlined one. You control a party of four adventurers who seek an audience with their king, only to discover the castle taken over by skeletons.

Each member of your party has only one action. Your fighter can fight in melee and is weak to magic but does extra damage to archers. Your archer has a range of 2, is weak to melee but does extra damage to mages. Your mage has a range of 3, does extra damage to melee, and is weak to archers, and he also has limited MP, recharging 1MP per turn. Finally, your healer does not have any attack at all, and she only recharges MP between battles.

This is my submission to the Lospec Jam 3, made in 30 days with a 256x144 resolution and a custom 48 color palette. Games made for this jam can only use touch (or mouse) input.

The game (code and art) was made by me, the music was made by my talented friend Andrew B.

If you liked it or have comments, please leave them below, and thank you so much for playing. I put a lot of time into this project and it means a lot that you spent your time to check it out.

Great and stylish game, for some reason the “destroyed” animation gave me Prince of Persia 2 cutscenes vibes

You and your team did a great job! But, to be honest, I’m not that much smart for strategy games and gave up once I’ve accidentally healed the enemy for 17 HP :D

Hey Clyde, thanks for playing! I played some of Forest Story last night and fell in love with it, will definitely play a lot more later.

Regarding healing an enemy, I'm not sure how that happened, and I cannot replicate this; TRPGs are very complex games and I'm not surprised there are some bugs deep in there. I definitely appreciate the compliments though, put a lot of work into the style!! That dithering animation when a unit is destroyed is just a shader that can be found here

It’s okay, don’t mind the bugs - TRPG’s ARE hard to make and it’s a gamejam entry, so it’s no shock some glitches’n’stuff might suddenly appear (In forest story, a couple of people managed to get stuck in an activatable platform, so I’m no exception to that phenomenon :P)
